Spotlight on the East
The Hertforshire's Year 8 & G&T Day Resource Kit The Hertfordshire Mathematics Team and Leading Mathematics Teachers' Group built  this fabulous resource kit for use with Year 8 pupils; it uses circle work with extensions into trigonometry, all in a problem-based context tied to motor cars and race tracks!  Includes in-depth planning considerations, problems and presentation resources.

NCETM Staff Changes in the Eastern Region
We are sad to announce that, from April 1st, the Millennium Mathematics Project (MMP) have resigned from the role of Regional Coordinator (Schools) to enable them to focus on other aspects of their work. We are pleased that they will continue to work with us as NCETM Associates and we value the continuing link that this will give us with MMP and the NRICH project.

Until a new coordinator is appointed the role will be carried out by Sandy Cowling, a former LA adviser of wide experience and Joan Ashley, the current Regional Coordinator for FE, who has also worked in schools and as a PGCE tutor to trainees in the secondary sector.

The post for the full time Regional Coordinator (Schools) is currently being advertised on the portal. If you are interested please click here for further details. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 7th May.

Teaching and learning functional mathematics – in spite of its somewhat uninspiring title, this article from the QIA site contains a wealth of suggestions for teaching mathematics in ways which foster thinking and understanding.  If you don't have time to read it all, have a look at Section 2, which discusses problem solving.
Reflections Dr Jennifer Piggott developed these blogs to stimulate discussion about maths enrichment and improving pupils' classroom experiences.  Read & share your thoughts on Models, Metaphors and Representations, Visualising, Rich Tasks, Enrichment and Enhancement or Negative Numbers can Make us Feel Negative but that can be Positive.

Learning Without Limits
There is much food for thought in this case study about pupils taking more control of their own learning in Hertfordshire. Can we apply the practices it discusses to the teaching of older learners?

ICT-supported Teaching and Learning
Discover the findings and resources developed by a research team from the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Education, which examined how teachers promote student learning in secondary subject lessons by  incorporating ICT.

♦ CPD Web Resources
Looking for ways to incorporate ICT into your maths lessons?
This problem offers a simple challenge using logic gates and circuits. Through experimenting with switches and settings, students will begin to see the structure of logic gates emerge without the need for any detailed formalism.  ♦ CPD & Networking Links
