Rob Eastaway is a well-known and highly-respected author who is doing great work to popularise mathematics.
In his third and final piece, Joined Up Teachers, (specially adapted for the NCETM from his fascinating lecture at the Joined Up Mathematics Conference, at Keele University earlier this year), Rob looks at how we bring the mathematics community together and engage those who feel disconnected from the subject. (These articles are abridged from the full text which is appearing in the November issue of the Mathematical Gazette).

A report by the National Audit Office (NAO) has found that nearly a quarter of 11-year olds have not reached the standard set for pupils of their age, and some 10 percent of 11 year-olds have the mathematical abilities of 7-year olds.
Over the next month there will be three short (3 day) online discussion forums, hosted by Prema, where teachers and teacher educators across Europe can share perceptions and experiences of their classrooms. At the end of each day, a brief summary will be posted to stimulate discussion across national boundaries.

The RECME Summer Residential took place on Thursday and Friday, 26th and 27th June at Eastwood Hall near Nottingham. 34 teachers and organisers of CPD took part; these included 28 teachers, some of whom teachers are also the organisers of the initiatives in which they are taking part.
The NCETM awarded a grant of £5,120 to Wilberforce College, East Hull. The project started in January 2007 for the duration of 11 months. The project were considering the following questions, 'to what extent does making connections within mathematics aid the learning, and how does it do so?' and 'how does a lack of connections hinder learning?'. This project has now finished and their final report has been submitted to the NCETM.
