As part of the mathematical learning at Allendale Middle School in Northumberland, the school have undertaken three mini projects that link classroom mathematics with the real world.

Their Year 5 pupils have grown 4 different bedding plants, Year 7 pupils studied the work of Escher and produce a design based on tessellation and symmetry and Year 8 pupils studied the topic of speed from the viewpoint of the science and mathematics curriculum.

 
The Mathematics Enhancement Primary Project (Newcastle - Gosforth)
The aim of the project was to develop whole class interactive teaching, using the MEP Primary scheme in Years 5 & 6 at Gosforth Central Middle School.
 
Maths At Work
Business in the Community in the North East and the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) are working in partnership to link teachers and business volunteers to look at bringing maths to life inside and out of the classroom.
 
Creative Partnerships
A community for anyone interested in exploring teaching for creativity in maths.
 
Functional Maths
A team in the North East of England, is developing Professional Development materials for Functional maths.
 
Learning Maths Outside the Classroom
In November 2006 the DCSF published its manifesto 'Learning Outside the Classroom'. The NCETM actively promotes the learning of mathematics outside the classroom, this part of our web portal features projects that demonstrate good practice from many parts of the country. We hope you will find these projects inspiring, and be encouraged to share your ideas and projects.

Maths4Life
Supporting teachers in their use and development of active teaching and learning approaches with learners working from around Entry level, Level 1 and Level 2.
 
Subject Learning Coaches Network
A regional focus for teachers using the approaches exemplified in the QIA (Standards unit) 'Improving Learning in Mathematics' resource.
 
HLTA - Higher Level Teaching Assistant
The national agreement on raising standards and tacking workload recognised that school support staff already make a vital contribution to pupils’ learning and achievement.
