Mathematics to be piloted as 'twin' GCSE
|
Last updated 15 December 2008 by NCETM_administrator
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has announced the piloting of a 'twin' mathematics GCSE exam.
The pilot will begin in September 2010, and will reflect the new secondary school curriculum and the introduction of functional skills. One exam will focus on the application of mathematics in everyday situations, including financial applications, while the other exam will focus on problem-solving skills.
Under these, mathematics will remain available as a single, self-contained GCSE course. But there will also be an extra choice of taking a separate double mathematics course, which will be worth two GCSEs. This would have to be taken as whole subject - rather than two separate halves as originally envisaged.
