Post-16 Network Meetings

This term's SE Subject Learning Coaching Network meetings were held on Thursday 19 June at the Holiday Inn, Guildford and on Monday 7 July at Smithfield, London.  Both these meetings had as their focus, Functional Maths.

This is what other teachers have said about these meetings:
"I came away feeling most inspired.  I have not taught maths for 20 years and I know my ways of teaching are rusty.  I hope I have the chance to attend a similar course in the future.  It is amazing how much useful information you can give in one short day!"

"I enjoy both the active engagement and the networking side of these meetings - they are so useful in many ways."

Free Summer School for Teachers in Further Education
The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics  organised a two day residential FE Summer School as part of the National Teaching and Learning Change Programme, funded by QIA.  It was held on 26th & 27th June 2008 at the National Science Learning Centre at the University of York. Fourteen teachers from the SE attended and Laurence Satow from Sussex Downs College lead a session on Lesson Study.

Join the SE Team for Tea & Cakes at an Information Sharing Meeting
The SE regional coordinators having been meeting teachers, trainers and lecturers at a series of Information Sharing Meetings around the region over the last few months.  Attendees have explored our online resources and found out how we can work together to improve professional development.

"The meeting was very helpful - and welcoming. I enjoyed exploring the 'portal' and realising that there is a maths world beyond my classroom!"

“I’ve recently been asked to take over the role of subject leader for Maths. Although I am passionate about the subject I don’t know wha’ts there; so I am thrilled by the outside support the NCETM can provide as well as the opportunity to network with colleagues to build my confidence. Thank you very much.”

Initial Teacher Education
Last academic year we spoke to 250 trainee teachers and 30 subject mentors. So far, this year, we have arranged visits to Brighton, Canterbury Christchurch, Oxford, Oxford Brookes, Portsmouth, Southampton and Sussex Universities. If you are a SCITT, a DRB or a HEI who has trainee teachers, please contact us if you would like us to talk to your trainees about the role of NCETM and the ways in which it can support beginning teachers.
