insted of a key note speaker we decided at the time to go for workshops
my team (the maths team) split up in pairs and took groups of vocational teachers
we initially put some questions up on the smartboard with which students struggle and got them to do them - most were so eager to do them - some of course hesitant but we got teachers to help each other
after that we used the bowland maths resources on a topic we assumed relevant for the particular vocational group or simply related to everyday life such as the cheapest taxi etc.
we had such a great morning and since a lot of requests for support in other areas - we will surely do more across college over the year but this was much better than anything theoretical
i actually just observed a class in a differnet area and to my delight lots of numeracy was embedded in the lesson - some important feedback will surely focus on this lovely active embedding of maths .....
