Hi,

Just wondered if anyone is using the Math No Problem scheme in particular in year 6. I would be keen to make links with a school who is as we are the only one in our area and feeling a little isolated at times. Also, does anyone have the teachers notes for the Y6 Ratio and Proportion unit?

Thanks

Hi

Yes I am using the Math No Problem scheme in Year 6 - I am finding it great in terms of developing conceptual understanding - although do face constant concerns from the senior staff and other year 6 teachers who are concerned about pace and need to just practice for SATS tests!!

Where is your school as I am based in Southampton.  Would love to chat about about your feelings.  Have you bought in to the whole scheme or just purchased the text books and workbooks?

Hello,

We introduced Maths No Problem this year across the school. My year 6 team have been fantastic and have delved straight into it using both the textbooks and the workbooks. They have questionned a few things but we have tweaked it to suit the needs of our children and the SATs tests e.g. some of the word problems are far harder than what they would ever eexperience so we've used hese only vor our children who are working at greater depth.

We have all of the notes on the website- do you have a log in that you can access the resources from as this is really useful in differentiating and understanding how to teach the lessons effectively.

If you need any more advice/suppoort, please comment back as I would be more than happy to dscuss things further.

Thanks,

Katrina

We are using - Saltdean near Brighton. Feel free to email enq@saltdean.brighton-hove.sch.uk and we can pass you on to our Y6 teachers. We are a MNP island on the South Coast. Happy to share but we are in Year 1 of the journey.

We are using Maths No Problem in year six. The children started the programme with their year five teacher and we are really pleased with how they are doing in terms of tackling tricky word problems and developing their own methods. We are based in Brighton- where are you?

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. We too are using Maths No Problem across the school. We began last Autumn in Year 5 then the rest of the school started during the Spring of last year. This year we are all using the scheme and I have moved into Y6 and taken this across.

I agree about some of the word problems. We are using deepening learning activities for all children to build in written reasoning so we have evidence. I would be happy to share these.

We do not have access to a log in anymore now hence why we are missing the Ratio and Proportion and Statistics unit notes.

Thanks,

Becca

Hi,

We haven't bought the whole scheme just yet - only the workbooks. A few of our teachers really liked them and used them this year, I intend on making it policy to follow them next year though. Has anyone done this yet?

Best

Tom

Hi, I am Maths lead and moving into Y6. I have just bought the MNP scheme following a 3 day course with Dr Yeap Ban Har in London at the end of term. I am rolling it out across the whole school mid-September! I'm really keen to hear about/see your planning. Obviously, it is all online, but what are you producing as evidence of planning? I have some ideas for a template, but would really like to see what others are doing. If you are willing to share, I'd love to hear from you! I'm really keen to link up with other Y6 teachers, especially as this is my first year in Y6 and MNP!

Thanks

Shelley x

I'm a mastery specialist and a big advocate of the approach in general, and MNP materials in particular. We have used MNP in Y6 for two years now. It requires some judicious tweaking in order to gap-fill where pupils are unfamiliar with the approach, as well as avoiding some of the more complex word problems as they are too time-consuming and beyond the scope of the SATS (the idea is to stretch their thinking, rather than actually solving a load of age-appropriate problems). For planning, we ended up scrapping any typed versions as teachers invariably ended up wasting time copying and pasting from the website. Instead, we screenshot everything and hand-write our annotations which I have personally found much more conducive to thinking through the lesson in detail.
