Rounding Year 5

Hello,

Following the Maths No Problem scheme, just completed two lessons on rounding and have most children still struggling to round to 1000. I have gone back to basics and started back with number lines and rounding to 10 and 100 and still most children are struggling with the concept of rounding.

Any advice please?

Have a look back at previous year groups when rounding has first been introduced to see what model is promoted.

At our school we use the terminology closer to, and our recording is always linked to the number line with the multiple before and multiple after.  We also avoid any numbers which involve considering the '5' and which it is closer to.

So what will children do when they come across numbers such as 5, 50, 500 depending on the number they need to round to?
