Practical Maths ideas for KS3/ KS4 student

I am the home educator of my 12 year old nephew. He is very good at  Maths and we have covered much of the KS3 curriculum. I have started KS4 with him, but he finds many of the text books very off putting as they aren't very engaging for younger students. He is a very practical boy too. Does anyone have any suggestions for practical Maths activities for KS4 please? I am concerned he will lose his interest in Maths before we start his GCSE course on a formal basis at 14. Many thanks.

If you look on the Stem Library (you will need to register and it is free) you will find the SMILE resources and the GAIM resources that have many practical activities.

Also I have found many of my students also enjoy the activities on the Transum site.  One of the main points of the new GCSE is 'writing reasons' so it is important to help him see that being very detailed and systematic (I liken it to explaining everything to a martian as if the martian has no knowledge of maths at all) will help him prepare for his GCSE.  I start this preparation with my students in yr 7 who are 11 yr olds.  More praise for detail and systematic approaches than for solutions.

Hope this helps!

Very many thanks for your kind assistance, I'll follow these leads up and hopefully keep him engaged in Maths until GCSE!

I have had a good look through the resources and they look great, plenty to keep him busy and engaged in the new term! Many thanks once more, it's much appreciated.
