Maths Week England will run from 11th -16th November 2019. As part of Maths Week England AMSP has created resources which raise awareness of the impact of fast fashion on the climate. We are inviting students to turn their calculations into a data visualisation for our competition. The competition finalists will be judged by Mona Chalabi, data editor at The Guardian US.

Cat van Saarloos and MEI have created the following resources to support Maths Week England and to raise the profile of Core Maths.

This is from Cat:

Resources and details of the competition on the Visualising the Climate Crisis are now on the MEI website: https://mei.org.uk/competitions and will be on the AMSP website this week too. Resources and competition details are attached. These resources are a great way of demonstrating how Core Maths can feel different to other maths lessons to both teachers and students.

“As part of Maths Week England 2019 AMSP is running a Data Visualisation competition. Students can submit entries of their working out from the Visualising the Climate Crisis Resource and their resulting Data Visualisation by Friday 22nd November and the best entry will win a £25 voucher and feature on our website and the Royal Statistical Society’s blog. There are four versions (A, B, C and D) of the resources so they can be used in Primary all the way up to Year 13.”

Some quotes from teachers on the resources:

“This is so good with a lot of mathematical scope!” @tessmaths

“Questions work well and there is an excellent message behind it” @mdawesmdawes

“Excellent, practical resource about an important issue. Very straightforward to use too!” @reflectivemaths

“Wow!!!! An excellent resource, pitched at the correct level and excellent to embed in sessions” GCSE Maths teacher

“Has real world links and vocational signposting” Lecturer in Post Compulsory Education

“Very creative, very apt and I think children would be interested in how they can recycle their jumpers” Teacher Educator in ITE Primary Mathematics

“I really enjoyed the fact that they were able to do such a broad range of skills in such a short amount of time.  Many topics that they struggle with such as converting units of measure came a lot more easily to them as they were desperate to work out how tall the jumper tower would be in a unit of measure they could imagine.” GCSE Maths resit teacher @QPHS_maths

Resources aimed at Years 9-11 also contain slides at the end to raise awareness of Level 3 Core Maths.

You will also see that Tom Button is running a Desmos Art competition to celebrate Maths Week England too (full details on the MEI website).
