Mathematics Mastery is a professional development programme for teachers. Working in partnership with schools to embed a mastery approach to maths teaching, we aim to improve attainment, enjoyment and confidence in mathematics. We focus not only on narrowing the achievement gap between different groups of students, but also raising standards overall and reinvigorating enthusiasm for the subject.
Our approach is rooted in robust research and internationally recognised methods. In particular we draw on evidence from high-performing areas such as Singapore and Shanghai, where mathematical appreciation is firmly embedded in the culture and attainment is consistently high.
The programme has three core elements. We provide strategic and practical training for teachers and senior leaders, including ongoing coaching, mentoring and school visits. We develop a range of curriculum resources to support the professional development, which are accessed on our online toolkit. We also provide ongoing opportunities for collaboration to share ideas, learning and best practice and maximise effectiveness of the programme.
Our approach is underpinned by key principles including high expectations for every child and 'depth before breadth' (exploring fewer topics in greater depth). We also emphasise problem-solving and conceptual understanding to develop mathematical knowledge and skills, enabling children to fully grasp their learning rather than simply memorise procedures.
