The Building Blocks of Early Years Maths

NCETM CPD Standard

Mathematical learning is like a building, made up of many bricks, which connect together and form a strong structure. Without the firmest foundations at the bottom (i.e those secured in the early years) this structure will crumble, in other words there will be gaps in children’s mathematical understanding. This 2 day course will be delivered by Elaine Bennett, author of popular “The Building Blocks of Early Maths” (2014), “Everyday Maths through Everyday Provision” (2011) and “Storybook Maths” (2009). The course will include a simple gap task where practitioners will reflect on their own children and the “building blocks of early maths” they demonstrate through everyday play activities.

Course Aims

  • To explore and identify the “building blocks” (key concepts) that young children need to have in order to become successful and confident mathematicians, in relation to both number and shape, space and measure
  • To develop practitioner subject knowledge of early maths and what progression looks like in the EYFS
  • To consider the role of assessment and planning: what are observations of children’s mathematical learning really telling us? How do we use these to inform planning

To develop practitioner’s confidence in recognising the common misconceptions young children can develop in mathematics and how to overcome these….and ensure they don’t feed into these!

By the end of the course, delegates will be familiar with:

  • Recognising and addressing common misconceptions that can become barriers to learning in maths.
  • The role of the adult and environment in enabling children to build firm mathematical foundations
  • Progression in mathematical learning throughout the EYFS and into KS1.
  • Simple activities to support children operating at varying levels mathematically that support progression in learning.
  • How low cost/no cost, everyday items can be used to inspire mathematical learning.
