Big Ideas of Calculations

NCETM CPD Standard

Course Aims:

  • Understand how four big ideas in arithmetic underpin facility with the four operations.
  • Understand how to make use of the four big ideas through the teaching of calculation at all stages of learning from Yr-Y6.

Course summary: Pupils are expected to be proficient in the four operations by the time they leave primary school, however some children struggle. This course will reveal to delegates what four big ideas of arithmetic (equivalence, part-whole relationships, unitising and inverse relationships) mean and how they reoccur through the curriculum. By teachers having a clear understanding of these key ideas and how to plan for them, pupils will have a better opportunity to access the mathematics they are working on. The course is separated over 3 half days. A gap task will be set between each of the days.
