Building Mathematics: Manipulatives (KS1&2)


NCETM CPD Standard

Course Aims:

  • To enable Teaching Assistants to support learners using mathematical manipulatives.
  • Understand the principles of the 4 operations and how to make these accessible to struggling learners.

By the end of the course, delegates will be familiar with:

  • A range of concrete resources that can be used to support mathematical learning
  • How children develop an understanding of the 4 operations 
  • How to use the concrete resources to support learners in mathematics

Course summary: This course is designed for teaching assistants to enable them to understand how they can draw on familiar classroom materials to support learning in mathematics. Whilst this course is most suitable for TAs anyone interested in understanding how mathematical concrete resources are used to ensure pupils develop understanding of the four operations for arithmetic. The course will support the development of professional subject knowledge as well as knowledge for supporting learners.

Part of each day will be to observe a group of children working with an adult using some of the equipment that has been discussed.

Day 1: Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division

Day 2: Fractions 

Learning Support Staff / Higher Level Teaching Assistant, Newly Qualified Teacher
