The resource Thinking Through Mathematics is now available online. It was originally designed for teachers of Adult Numeracy working with learners from Entry Level through to Level 2. However, it will also be useful to all teachers of Mathematics and numeracy who are working in schools with pupils at Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.

About the Resource

Thinking Through Mathematics is based on many years of research. It emphasises the interconnected nature of mathematics and is ‘challenging’ in that it seeks to confront common conceptual difficulties head on. For instance, traditional practices are reversed by allowing learners opportunities to tackle problems before offering them guidance and support. This encourages them to apply pre-existing knowledge and allows us to assess and then help them build on that knowledge.

Aims
  • to help learners to adopt more active approaches towards learning
  • to develop more ‘connected’ and ‘challenging’ teaching methods.

Where do I find the materials?

They are now available online, where you can find full details of the resource. There are also suggestions of how to integrate your use of it into your own reflective learning as part of your own professional development.
