We’ve just published our first podcast - a discussion on requirements for entry to A level maths courses - and also the first tranche of new professional development materials to support primary teachers introducing a teaching for mastery approach in maths; they’ve already proved to be very popular.

First NCETM podcast

We've just published the first of what will be regular NCETM podcasts exploring different areas of maths education. In this one, the NCETM Director, Charlie Stripp, is challenged by two secondary maths teachers to defend his assertion, contained in a recent blog post, that a Grade 5 at GCSE should entitle Year 12 students to be considered for entry to A level maths courses. We hope you enjoy listening to it.

Primary Professional Development materials

We’ve started to publish professional development materials to support primary teachers introducing a teaching for mastery approach in maths. They have been written by a team of Mastery Specialists, developed under the Maths Hubs Programme, working with other experts in primary maths teaching and learning, and led by the NCETM’s Director for Primary Mathematics, Debbie Morgan.

The materials aim to help teachers strengthen their subject knowledge, as well as their understanding of the order of learning steps required to give pupils the best chance of building deep and secure mathematical understanding.

They are not, in any way, lesson plans, but they can be used in conjunction with a high-quality mastery textbook to support planning.

Publication will be in phases over the course of the 2017-2018 school year and beyond. The first phase sees the publication of the first six segments of the ‘Number, Addition and Subtraction’ spine.

News from the maths Subject Associations

As we mentioned last month, there’s a proposal to merge the five Subject Associations (AMET, ATM, MA, NAMA and NANAMIC). There’s more information on the ATM and MA websites, and you can give your views and opinions before 4 December on a dedicated webpage.

In addition, the MA is interested to hear people’s experiences of preparing students for the new 9-1 Mathematics GCSE. They’ve set up a 60-second survey here.

In brief

  • We’ve recently simplified the way our community notifications work. Wherever you see a listing of communities you belong to (either in your Personal Learning Space, or in a ‘My Communities’ list), you’ll see a heading, Manage my community notifications, where you can tailor the way notifications work for you. If you need help with this, do contact us.
  • Details of bursaries to help with the costs of attending the British Congress of Mathematics Education (BCME) in April 2018 are now available; the maximum award is £300. The Resourceaholic blog has a good overview about the conference, outlining some of the sessions available.
  • The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is once again offering Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarships, for those who start their teacher training in 2018/19. The scholarships are worth £22 000 plus other benefits. The current application round closes on 27 November, and there will be another five rounds before the end of July 2018, although application rounds may close early if a large number of applications is received.   • A new report from the Education Endowment Foundation, based on analysing existing international research findings, offers eight broad recommendations for improving maths learning in Key Stages 2 and 3, particularly for those already struggling with the subject. And there’s a substantial overlap with the principles of teaching for mastery.
