The next batch of our professional development materials to support primary teachers introducing a teaching for mastery approach in maths has now been published!

Primary Mastery PD Materials

Further additions have been made to the professional development materials to support primary teachers introducing a teaching for mastery approach in maths.

The materials, produced jointly by the NCETM and Maths Hubs, aim to help teachers strengthen their subject knowledge, as well as their understanding of the order of learning steps required to give pupils the best chance of building secure mathematical understanding.

In the curriculum area of number, addition and subtraction, the materials for both Years 1 and 2 are now complete and are also available to download in single zip files.

New payments for schools increasing uptake of A/AS level (and Core) Maths

The DfE has announced details of how the new Advanced Maths Premium will be paid to schools and colleges who increase the numbers of students taking level 3 (i.e. more advanced than GCSE) courses in all maths subjects. This includes Maths, Further Maths, Core Maths and Statistics.

New NCETM podcast – books that help maths teaching

Following a recent Twitter discussion, we’ve released a new podcast of a discussion where five teachers describe books – old and new – that have helped in their maths teaching.

MEI survey on post GCSE maths take-up

Our consortium partner, MEI, has published findings from a survey of schools and colleges on take-up of level 3 maths courses following curriculum and funding changes. There was a small drop in Year 12 students starting A/AS level maths last autumn, but Further Maths participation is holding up well, and Core Maths take-up is growing steadily.


The British Congress of Mathematics Education (BCME), held every four years, takes place at Warwick University just after Easter. NCETM representatives will be giving sessions on each of the four days, on topics ranging across the educational phases, and reflecting a variety of Maths Hubs projects. We’ll also have an information stand in the exhibition space. Please drop by and say hello.

  • The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is once again offering Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarships, for those who commence their initial teacher training in the academic year 2018/19. The scholarships are worth an initial £22 000 plus other benefits. The current application round closes on 23 April, and there will be another two rounds before the end of July 2018. Find out more
  • The London Mathematical Society (LMS) Teacher CPD Grants scheme offers opportunities for mathematics teachers to attend training which is specifically mathematical. Awards of up to £400 are offered, and there are four application rounds each year: the next round closes on 30 April. Find out more
  • The British Council in collaboration with the NCETM and Maths Hubs has developed a free two-day programme, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving in Mathematics. Places are available to attend the South Yorkshire Maths Hub programme (starting 23 March 2018) and North Mids & Peaks Maths Hub programme (starting 27 March 2018).
