The NCETM has produced a range of materials designed to assist Early Years (and Year 1) practitioners who are introducing children to early number. Using the CBeebies Numberblocks series as a launch pad, the materials enable practitioners to move on confidently from each episode, helping children to bring the numbers and ideas to life in the world around them.
Numberblocks introduces the concept of number to young children gently through engaging storylines which feature loveable characters. Each episode combines story, song and animation to introduce ideas in a way which makes number exciting and easy to understand.
The materials produced by the NCETM are designed to be used in conjunction with the Numberblocks episodes. They highlight and develop the key mathematical ideas that are embedded in the programmes. Each set of materials comes in the form of a PowerPoint file, and features an episode description, details of the maths in the episode, and information about the mathematical language used, including suggestions of key sentences to use with children. You can download the materials from our Numberblocks page.
BBC Numberblocks episodes are available on DVD from a number of online retailers: Vol 1 (Episodes 1-15) and Vol 2 (16-30). A few episodes are periodically available, in rotation, on the BBC iPlayer – but these won’t necessarily match the NCETM materials published so far; more materials are available on the CBeebies' Numberblocks page.
There are 30 episodes in Series 1 - we would love to hear your feedback on our support materials for the first five episodes while we are building materials for the remaining episodes.
