NCETM congratulates students and teachers on GCSE Mathematics results

The NCETM congratulates all the students who received their GCSE results today. We also acknowledge the work of their maths teachers in supporting students to achieve their potential in the subject.

The 9-1 grading system for GCSE Maths is now in its third year. The proportion of students passing maths at a grade 7 or higher and achieving a good pass at grade 4 has remained broadly the same as in 2018. This is to be expected, since it is currently national policy across all subjects to keep these proportions stable every year. However, at individual school and college level, rises and falls in these proportions will occur.

NCETM Director Charlie Stripp said:

"All those who have achieved a grade 4 or higher should be encouraged to continue to study maths beyond GCSE. Further developing maths and data analysis skills helps young people to prepare for the future, whatever their aspirations. Advanced maths qualifications are required for many degree courses and higher level apprenticeships, and they can lead to reduced offers for a wide range of degree subjects. […] For students who did not achieve a grade 4, it’s vital that they continue working towards that goal post-16.”
