Departmental Workshops - Structured professional development activities

Departmental Workshops- Converting Units

These workshops are written to provide your mathematics team with structured professional development you can deliver in-house utilizing all members' expertise and knowledge. We believe 3 – 6 modules per year could be an ideal balance.

The QCA 'Implications for teaching and learning from the 2006 key stage 3 mathematics tests' recommend that teachers, ‘encourage pupils to recall the common conversions of one metric unit to another and the basic facts relating to days, months and years'.

Objectives related to this topic are:

  • convert one metric unit to another, e.g. grams to kilograms
  • know rough metric equivalents of imperial measures in common use, such as miles, pounds (lb) and pints
  • convert between area measures (e.g. mm2 to cm2, cm2 to m2, and vice versa) and between volume measures (e.g. mm3 to cm3, cm3 to m3, and vice versa)
