Real issues in the life of a fictional Subject Leader

I’ve always maintained that being a middle manager is one of the most demanding roles within a school. I say this without having acquired any experience as a senior manager, but the combination of managerial and leadership duties combined with the relatively heavy teaching load leaves little time to breathe.

Yet there is some good news. The single most time-consuming burden endured by all subject leaders, teachers and students alike has finally come to an end. It’s goodbye and farewell to maths coursework.

Its intention was good but the reality proved problematic. Many students had difficulties accessing the tasks (particularly the Handling Data one). The net result was systematic spoon-feeding by the teachers who themselves felt under pressure. Subject Leaders and their staff would then spend unnecessary time chasing, marking and moderating. I felt great relief handing over the students’ marks to the school’s examinations officer knowing that it was for the last time. I’m also relieved not having to ever repeat this process with any other year group. Coursework will not be missed!

As a department, however, we are making a conscious push to reintroduce investigational tasks into the schemes of work both in Key Stage 3 and 4. This has, on the whole, been a welcome initiative, injecting a degree of creativity back into the planning of lessons. Many of our experienced teachers are reaching for their dusty worksheets, rediscovering investigational activities which they have not taught for years. The loss of coursework isn’t the reason for this resurgence but merely the catalyst. ‘Opposite Corners’ and such like will continue as investigational activities, yet without the assessment aspect there may finally be a chance of enjoying them.
