I hope you all have managed to enjoy the long summer break as much as I have and managed to get away from the rain maths_cafe_ad.jpgduring August. So the new school year is upon us and we are all back into the swing of planning, teaching, assessing…How many of you have vowed to friends and family that this year you are going to get the work life balance right, so what else do you want to achieve in 2008-9? Take a look at the Maths Café discussion Hopes for coming year and join in.

For those of you, like me, who stuck to non-mathematical reading this summer, you may not be aware of some research, led by Professor Edward Melhuish from Birkbeck, University of London, published in the journal Science.  Professor Melhuish’s research has shown that children who attend a pre-school nursery, or who play word and number games with a parent, are better at mathematics at the age of ten. The results showed that a combination of a good home learning environment, good pre-school education and a good primary school were all important for later results.  So what could we be doing to have an impact at home? Take a look at the project report Using mathematics games at home to raise attainment in KS1 and 2 students teacher_bulletin_title_small.jpgin the Teacher Enquiry Bulletin.  Sarah showed a novel approach to exchanging mathematics knowledge between home and school, and involving parents in their children’s mathematics learning at home. She recognises the value of promoting conversations at home about mathematics and sought to create opportunities for such conversations through encouraging the children to borrow mathematics games to play at home by creating a games library.
