Overview 
Thomas McAuley is Navigation Officer on the P & O ferry ‘Pride of Hull’. He discusses the importance of mathematics for anyone wishing to work as a pilot on a ship. In this clip he demonstrates the way to measure the visible distance to the horizon using Pythagoras Theorum. The mathematics used, involves tangents, right angles, radius, circles, Pythagoras and distance in metres.
