Workplace Mathematics
This video collection contains six examples of how mathematics is being used in various occupations. Each piece of footage lasts around 10 minutes.  The jobs covered are: Pharmacist, Builder, Bar Tender, Fashion Designer, Architect, Hairdresser and are filmed in Manchester centre and surrounding area.

The source files of the videos are also available to download. You need an flv player in order to view the videos after download. Download an flv player here if you don't  already have one.

Using the footage a group of teachers, consultants and an HEI tutor worked together collaboratively to discuss each  video and to ascertain the mathematics which emerged from the interviews and shots. This produced an healthy dialogue and an immense flow of creative ideas which helped to produce the list below.

Suggested use for teachers:
  • These videos can be used in two different ways:
  • Teachers use them as a source of discussion to work with- to plan a module of work for their students
  • Teachers use the videos as they stand to demonstrate to their students examples of how the mathematics studied at school can be useful in the world of work.

The builder video started off well until they mentioned VAT at 17.5% - Another out of date resource

Am I doing something wrong? The 'Maths at work Manchester' plays only 26 seconds of introductory title then stops.
