Peer-to-peer lesson observation

Lesson observation often brings with it the idea of being judged and assessed on how well you are doing; it may feel that it is being done to you rather than with you. However, the process of observing and being observed by one of your peers can be one of the most illuminating and rewarding professional development experiences.

The NCETM strongly recommends that if you choose to use this activity as a basis for your professional learning, you keep it quite distinct from any whole-school process of performance management or appraisal.

Some suggested ways of working:

  • decide on a colleague with whom you want to work, whom you trust, and who is also willing to work on their teaching with you;
  • agree a focus for your mutual observations: tell your partner what you are interested in working on, and what you would like them to focus on in the observation;
  • agree a protocol of what they will do in the lesson (for example, will they take notes? just observe? or interact with your learners at appropriate stages in the lesson?);
  • set aside plenty of time as soon after the lesson as you can for reflection and discussion;
  • begin the post-lesson discussion by re-iterating your purpose for the observation - ie what you want to get out of it;
  • conduct the subsequent discussion on the basis of both of you trying to recall and describe evidence that helps to support this agreed purpose;
  • end the debrief session by articulating what you got out of this, what was significant for you, and what action you want to take following the lesson and discussion;
  • agree a date where you will switch roles and observe your colleague.

I really want to support more peers with this idea - and begin to develop a bank of resources and sites to refer staff to for each are of development
