What Makes a Good Resource

Data Handling - Murder Investigation

Teacher comment:
I want my students to take more responsibility for their own learning and so I was looking for an activity which would allow them to take ownership a bit more and provide them with an opportunity to reflect on what they had achieved.

This activity encourages students to apply their skills of representing and interpreting data within the context of a murder investigation. I hoped that it would engage them and generate a lot of discussion.  I wanted to step back and allow them to progress without unnecessary intervention and perhaps experiment a little.


What I did:
I introduced the task to a Year 9, level 5/6 class using the printed resources (included). I then asked them what they hoped to achieve from it, i.e. what would the finished product look like.  I was keen for them to question what a good piece of work might look like.  We discussed things like “was presentation as important as accuracy?”, “was it necessary to justify working and if so, how should they do that?”

The discussion surprised me.  I didn’t think I was going to get such a high level of interest and debate. I found that all I needed to do was to facilitate the discussion and compile the agreed assessment criteria.  They seemed hooked.

The groups were selected and provided with the ‘evidence’.  Tasks could be completed in any order and teamwork was encouraged.  After a while, the interaction and levels of success within groups varied and gentle prompting and guidance was required.  Nevertheless, their enthusiasm, interest and sense of competition was evident. The activity was doing its job of putting a little excitement back into the drawing of charts and graphs.

Each group was to compile and present their evidence to the class.  Some students were designated as observers and their role was to mark and, most importantly, comment upon the presentation of each group under the headings of the agreed assessment criteria. The marking was initially conducted individually however it soon became apparent that feedback to the presenting students would not be instant.  As a result, each group was then asked to summarise their thoughts and feedback after a five minute discussion.  This provided the students with an insight on how they themselves could improve.

I did this with high ability Year 6's. They loved it. They came up with the ideas of how to analyse the data and document the findings themselves. We also recorder the process on ipads using the Explain Everything app and created an iMovie project of our work.

I guess it depends on how well your class work at this sort of thing! I know that, with some classes, this would probably be more than two lessons work as they like to faff around so much! There are other groups that i think would do this in a lesson.

I like the carousel idea though - I'll have to give this one a go. I've used quite a few of these resources now. Have you used anything else that you've liked?

I have simplified it a little and used it with a year 6 top maths set...
Next week, they have to present their evidence and each of them will be a defence lawyer stating why their client is innocent....other than one culpit of course....it has been a huge success...

That's great, Helen! Really pleased you like it. Would be great to have your thoughts on why it went so well, how you ran it, what did your learners like about it, etc.
Maybe you could post a thread here (https://www.ncetm.org.uk/community/thread/61327) in the "Recommend a Resource" community where more people might see it and be inspired to delve into this micro-site themselves.

This is one of the best resources I have seen to date! I tried it with two groups of students yesterday - one level 1 group and one level 2 group of adults and both groups loved working with it. If you have any more like this, I would love to see them.
