Introduction

Welcome to the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) Further Mathematics microsite which will provide Further Mathematics teachers with resources, news and support.

What is Further Mathematics?

Further Mathematics is an AS/A level qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in AS/A level Mathematics.

AS level Further Mathematics is designed to be learned alongside AS level Mathematics in year 12, or taken up as a new AS subject alongside A2 Mathematics in year 13.

Why offer Further Mathematics?

There are many good reasons for students to take Further Mathematics:
  • students taking Further Mathematics overwhelmingly find it to be an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating and empowering experience;
  • for someone who enjoys mathematics, provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts;
  • it enables students to distinguish themselves as able mathematicians in the university and employment market;
  • it makes the transition to a mathematics-rich university course easier;
  • some university courses will only accept students with Further Mathematics qualifications.

Explore the Further Mathematics Support Programme website to find out more about the benefits of offering Further Mathematics to your students.

Further Mathematics Video

With the help of Chris Budd and several students, the Further Mathematics Support Programme has produced a new video to promote Further Mathematics. This can be viewed on the FMSP website, and it will soon also be available on the Maths Careers website. Copies of the leaflet featured in the video (as well as other leaflets and posters) are available free of charge.

Free online A level Core Mathematics revision sessions

The Further Mathematics Support Programme has also produced a series of recordings of online revision sessions covering each of the topics in A level Core Mathematics.

Funding for small projects focusing on Further Mathematics

The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and the Further Mathematics Support Programme (FMSP) are committed to the idea of collaborative teacher enquiry as part of the landscape of professional development.

To this end the National Centre is looking to support a number of small, short term projects. We believe this experience will lead to participants wishing to take teacher enquiry further in the future. We can offer small amounts of funding (no more than £1 000) together with some online support from a member of your NCETM regional coordination team to start you off and support you in your teacher enquiry.

There is funding through the Further Mathematics Support Programme to ensure that some of these regional projects focus on Further Mathematics. More details and a simple application form can be found here.
