Stories of change - moving from '3' to '2'

I was appointed as subject leader in my school following the internal promotion of the previous post-holder to deputy head. At first I found this quite awkward, as any developments I wanted to introduce was criticising the very person who was now my line manager and this resulted in some resistance within the department.  After the first two terms I had a support meeting with my Local Authority consultant, and he suggested that I revisited our current vision statement for mathematics. On investigation it transpired that this had not been reviewed at any point since its introduction several years ago, and there had been several staffing changes since then. Once the ‘examination season’ had freed up some time, I arranged some INSET time for the whole department with the specific purpose of reviewing the current vision statement.

Before this meeting I had found several examples of vision statements from other schools. These were read and discussed by all members of the team (along with our own – anonymously). When I asked no-one recognised which was ours, which was actually rather convenient as it provided a good reason to proceed with creating a new one. The discussion gave me a good sense of what members of the team thought should be included, but I also asked everyone to provide two words that they would like to see within a new vision statement for the department.

Before this meeting I knew what I wanted to achieve within the department, and therefore what sort of tone the vision statement should have. This INSET time meant that the whole department knew what was happening, but I hope that they felt like they had contributed as a result. I couldn’t include all of their chosen words, but the overall result reflected elements of the conversations that had been had on that day.
