I was approached by a couple of members of the department who had been reading one of the journals from the mathematics subject associations that we subscribe to. They’d found a piece about student’s understanding of fractions and wanted to investigate it further.

Following a short session that they led at a department meeting we agreed to a work on this as a department. SLT have identified transition as an area to work on so we’re going to contact a couple of our feeder primaries to see if they’re interested in working with us on this. We’ve got pretty good links and have worked on a few projects with one of our biggest feeders but I’d like to see if we can work with more than one on this. I wonder if we’ll end up with a primary-secondary vision for what a fraction is and how best to help our students develop their own image that the students can carry through with them from the first time they meet the concept to their GCSE or A-level?!
