Focus on ratio and proportion

Ideas to use during your preparation of the lesson:

  • start by thinking about ratio and proportion by reading Ratio or Proportion? from the NRICH team
  • watch and think 'could I use that idea?' on Teachers’ TV
  • think about a starter by looking at these problems on NRICH – there are even more here!
  • could you adapt this PowerPoint from the Primary Magazine?
  • some learners who will need extra help and practice may find BBC Skillwise useful  – they can find a factsheet, activity, game, worksheet and quiz
  • watch the Maths in Work video Scaling in Theatre Set Design – at what point in the lesson will you use this video with your learners – before, during or after?
  • look at some of the many NCETM portal resources on ratio and proportion
  • open up the Departmental Workshop on Proportional reasoning and think if you could adapt some of the activities for your learners, and
  • get out your Mathematics in Context box and adapt/use the activity in there!
