What Makes a Good Resource

Frogs in a Pool Activity

Resource description:
We used frog beanbags, number cards and a hoop.

Teacher comment:
The children enjoyed throwing the frogs to see how many they could get in the hoop. It was interesting for me to see how many could make the link between the number on the card and beanbags.

What I did:
I sang the song:

Five little frogs went jumping one day
Over the hills and far away
Mother Frog said “croak, croak, croak, croak”
And only 4 little frogs came jumping back

and so on

The children throw the frog beanbags into the hoop one at a time as they sing the song and see how many out of five they get into the hoop. Then the next child collects all the frogs, as if they have all come jumping back.

The numbers 1 to 5 are written on separate pieces of card. The children have to find the number of frogs in the hoop and outside the hoop.

Reflection:
The activity was all about connections for me and finding links between the numbers and the symbols, with the cards and the beanbags. Patterns between the number of beanbags inside and outside the circle also caused interest, with me pointing out “oh look it’s a 2 and a 3 card this time, have all the cards been used yet?”
