Primary Mathematics Subject Leader Distance Learning Materials

The materials have been produced as a result of collaboration between the Mathematics Subject Associations (AMET, ATM, MA, NAMA and NANAMIC), supported by the National Centre, and provide subject leaders with the opportunity for in-depth professional study.

They are intended to offer a detailed and deep insight into what the role of subject leader involved. To help you, they have been divided into five key areas or themes:

  1. Leading the Curriculum
  2. Leading Learning
  3. Leading Personalised Learning
  4. Leading CPD
  5. Leading Improvement

Each of these modules provides CPD activities, discussion points and access to a wealth of articles and readings embedded in the text to stimulate individual and group study.

The following icons are used throughout to signal different types of CPD activity:

Activity - this is where we signal the opportunity to engage in some activity with other colleagues. Some of these activities could be suitable for use with colleagues in staff meetings or other group CPD sessions.

Digging Deeper – these are links to specific papers written especially for the in-depth modules. While links to these are embedded at particular points in the text of certain modules, they also stand alone as important documents, and a link to them is provided in the Quicklinks menu on the right-hand side of the screen.

Discuss – this is an invitation to discuss an issue arising from an activity, reading, etc. with a colleague; this could be a fellow mathematics subject leader or SMT colleague at school.

Link – where material in an in-depth module is linked to material in another, or to elsewhere in the NCETM portal or beyond, we have provide an easy link to this.

Listen – this icon signals where there is an audio file for you to listen to. For some of the articles referenced in the materials we have included an audio file of someone reading excerpts of the article or even the whole article, as some colleagues may find this a useful way to access these.

Mathematics Subject Leader File – We recommend that you keep a subject leader file where you can store and organise finished documents, recorded policies, minutes of meetings, action points, etc. At times throughout the modules we make suggestions of things you might record in such a file.

Personal Learning Space – when working with these materials, there may be times when you wish to record reflections, actions or tasks. The Learning Journal within your Personal Learning Space is an excellent place to do this, although you will need to be registered and logged in to use this area.

Read – indicates where you are invited to read an article.

Think and reflect – signals an appropriate moment for you to pause and reflect on the various activities, discussion points and readings that you have engaged in.

Watch – indicates video material.
