Departmental Workshops - Structured professional development activities   improving the learning environment

Improving the learning environment

The aim of this workshop is to structure a team activity in auditing and improving the learning environment. You will consider the impact of the learning environment on students in terms of displays, layout and technology.
This workshop requires a preparatory task:
  • Ask members of your team to use ‘Resource Sheet 1’ to create a plan of their classroom. (If you have a large department you might wish to restrict this exercise to a sample of classrooms.) This needs to be returned to you before the workshop with enough time to:
  • Make copies of the classroom plans for the rooms you want to look at during the workshop. Ensure that you have enough for each member of the department to have a copy of each of the rooms that you will visit.
  • Make a copy of ‘Resource Sheet 2’ on the reverse side of each of the above.
The activities in this workshop might prove to take a longer period of time than the normal 2 hours. You might want to choose only certain activities to match with your priorities, or alternatively you could choose to revisit the workshop over a longer period of time.
