News from the LSIS STEM programme

Mathematical Moments are now available on the Excellence Gateway. They offer you activities to use with your learners as well as opportunities to support your own professional development.

Each Mathematical Moment invites you to focus on a particular mathematical topic, offers suggestions for activities you could carry out with your learners, prompts you to anticipate and then reflect on learners’ responses and then suggests some follow-up ideas. The topics address levels from Entry Level through to Level 3 with many Mathematical Moments crossing over several levels.

You will find the topics listed under the headings:

  • Mostly algebra
  • Mostly number
  • Mostly shape and space
  • Mostly statistics.

Each Mathematical Moment exemplifies one of the principles of effective teaching which are outlined on page 4 of the Mathematics Matters Final Report.

This is a substantial resource bank with over 70 activities to explore with your learners, so why not review it now for some ideas to use in the next few weeks?

The format offers you an initial activity that does not demand a great deal of your time, but gives scope for further exploration, prompts for reflection and opportunities to develop your skills as a teacher.

These approaches and resources are available free to download as part of the LSIS STEM programme.
