MKN0903 - Strengthening Mathematical Knowledge

Sarah Pattison and Mieka Harris, Swavesey Village College, Cambridge

We are lucky in that we hardly ever hear this comment.  The reason is because we have worked together to ensure that Mathematics is no longer perceived to take place just in the Mathematics classroom.  We have contextualised learning in real life situations; taking what our students are already doing in other subjects and emphasising the links... Mathematics is about problem solving in different situations.

In order to do this we invited enthusiastic and forward thinking members of staff to form a collaborative working group, a truly cross-curricular working party.  This has created a safe and supportive environment in which to “try out” an idea.  We produced a number of resources that can be used as stand- alone Maths lessons but have far more impact if used with a colleague in another subject area, eg Fractions and Music.
