Who do I need in my change team?

How do I lead and manage effective improvement?

Who should I have in my team?
Change team members should:

  • act as a dynamic communications channel between the change team and the rest of the stakeholders, representing their own views and the views of those not on the team
  • form, oversee and, when appropriate, be directly involved in implementing change initiatives
  • help to identify potential 'quick wins' for the school
  • help prioritise change initiatives, and
  • contribute in a constructive way.

At the early stages of team building it is helpful to value all contributions and to broaden the perspective by using brainstorming which is enjoyable and time efficient. It may be helpful to use this article on brainstorming techniques to focus brainstorming with your team.

Activity: Juggling hats!

In primary schools many teachers wear several different ‘hats’!
Reflect on the teams you are currently in.
Choose one of these teams and write down the purpose of the team and who the members of the team are. 
What is your role within this team? 
What are the success criteria for the team? 
Do you know how effective the team is?
Now think about the current maths team. 
How well established is your team?

Bruce Tuckman identified four different stages in the development of effective teams: norming, forming, storming, performing. You may want to use this to establish how your team is developing.
How can I overcome barriers?
Sometimes it is difficult to motivate all members of the team to want to change. Reflecting on the emotional responses to change in the change process can sometimes enable a greater level of understanding about individual responses to change.
