Case Study – Developing resources in collaboration with engineering colleagues.

Mathematics in Engineering

Jacqui teaches mathematics at an 11-18 school in Cambridgeshire. She is a graduate in mathematics and computer science who has been teaching mathematics and physics for four years and hopes to apply for an AST post in the near future. She will be working closely with a teacher of Level 3 engineering mathematics during the coming year and providing additional mathematics support classes to engineering students.

She attended a National Centre workshop looking at the CPD issues that face teachers of mathematics within the Diploma in Engineering at Level 3. As a result of the workshop, she was interested in developing resources that would interest and motivate learners to learn mathematics through its application in practical engineering contexts. She was keen to get engineering colleagues involved in the development of the resource.

The Case study of the development of CPD and teaching resources to support the teaching of mathematics in the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering is Jacqui’s account of the work she did to develop these resources.

In her account, Jacqui identifies what she sees as the main CPD issues for teachers of mathematics within the engineering diploma.

  • Do you agree with these? Thinking about your own situation, are there any other issues you think are important?

Jacqui has produced two linked resources:

One of the activities in the CPD resource uses the Resolving Forces learner resource as a basis for discussion and reflection.
