NCETM Funded Projects in the North East

Teacher Enquiry Funded Projects (TEFPs)
St Thomas More is a mathematics and computing specialist school in the North East. The mathematics department is developing its expertise in the use of handheld technologies to support learners of mathematics. Working with Newcastle University’s Centre for Research in Learning and Teaching (CfLAT) they are enquiring into and developing suitable pedagogies for working in interactive connected classrooms. This study builds on lessons learnt from the two-year NCETM research project Small Software for Mathematics on Handheld Technology.

Mathematics Knowledge Networks (MKNs)
The theme for the MKN in North Tyneside is the development, trialling and evaluation of rich tasks. This network was developed from an existing Bowland maths network, which had been established in September 2008, with three day sessions and three twilight sessions. Several members of this existing network expressed a desire to continue meeting to investigate other sources for rich tasks. The reason for this was partly due to the enjoyment and challenge that the Bowland case studies had brought to both staff and pupils. Also, the feeling that it was increasingly important to enrich the mathematics curriculum with learning experiences that would develop problem solving and functionality, and also foster the independence of the students involved. They meet as an MKN once each half term for a twilight session of 90 minutes.

Regional Projects Programme (RPP)
Funding is still available for all regions. View the guidance and application process or contact your local Regional Coordinator for further information.
