Sports and Adventurous Activities
Activities involving sports and adventure provide excellent real-life examples of mathematics in action; from the recording of speed and calculation of averages, to points tables in football; from the planning of safe cycle routes, to orienteering exercises. Whether participants or observers, pupils can engage in some complex applied mathematics whether supporting their favourite football team or taking part in adventure holidays.
Outward Bound
Incorporating maths into residential visits.
Football Club Maths
Motivating under-performing Afro-Caribbean Boys.
Royal Yachting Association – Making Maths Meaningful
Motivating yr 8 students by experiencing mathematics through sailing with the RYA.
Maths at the match
Trip to local Championship team’s home matches give class chance to use real maths in a purposeful way.
