Early Years Magazine - Issue 15blue monster and red apple

Welcome to Issue 15 of the Early Years Magazine. Stories, songs and rhymes seem to crop up in almost every article in this Issue.

Editor's Entrée
We follow up on puppets and talking from last month’s issue, and bring you news of the new Primary Curriculum microsite.

Focus on...Harnessing fascination within our teaching of mathematical understanding in the Early Years
We explore how mathematics and music can work well together, generating creative and effective ways of enhancing every child’s experience whilst using, applying and developing their understanding of number.

R4U - Research for You
This month, Ian questions one particular aspect of the approach to teaching number outlined in the two sections ‘Numbers as labels and for counting’ and ‘Calculating’ contained in the document Practice Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Read his article to find out what the issue is.

We bring you an update from NRICH and some ideas for indoor and outdoor activities to help children develop understanding of quantity value and recognition of numerals.

Case study
This month’s case study is a little different. During early December, the DfE ran a seminar, What do we know about the achievement of children by the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage and what are the implications for achievement by the end of primary school? We bring you some of the highlights.

Maths to share - CPD for you and your colleagues
We revisit Shonette Bason, using another of her five-minute ‘Teachers TV’ programmes to support CPD.

Contributors to this issue include Cherri Moseley, Ian Thompson and Karen Wilding.
