Spreadsheets - Number and Algebra

A staff development workshop on using digital technologies for a group of teachers

This is the second of two workshops on spreadsheets.

Excel is not often underused to explore and investigate aspects of Number and Algebra. We have aimed to explore and practise:

  • simple Excel spreadsheet use to support mathematical thinking and conjecturing with a whole class
  • how to make the shared image of a spreadsheet clearly visible
  • the effect that the availability of a spreadsheet will have on the types of questions that can be asked and investigated
  • how to make students aware of and able to use spreadsheets as one of a number of tools for problem solving

This workshop aims to enable delegates to:

  • consider how a simple Excel spreadsheet can be used to support mathematical thinking and conjecturing with a whole class
  • learn how to make the shared image of a spreadsheet clearly visible
  • consider the effect that the availability of a spreadsheet will have on the types of questions that can be asked and investigated
  • consider how to make students aware of and able to use spreadsheets as one of a number of tools for problem solving
  • learn how to generate random numbers using a spreadsheet and consider how to use this function in the learning of mathematics
