Engineering Tasks

This pack of resources contains 20 tasks covering the majority of the Learning Objectives within Unit 8 of the Level 3 Engineering Diploma. The tasks have been developed by teachers and may well be suitable for mathematics teaching on other engineering courses. Some tasks will be more suitable for ‘exploratory learning’ others would be suitable for recapping and revising previously taught content. Some tasks are very open ended whilst others have more obviously ‘correct’ answers. Each task is designed to be accessible at a number of different levels, from those students who are studying mathematics at AS and A2 level alongside the diploma to those who have not studied mathematics beyond GCSE. The pack is designed to provide you with ideas from which you might develop your own sessions. At the end of this document is an appendix which gives some practical advice for problem solving.

  • Teachers’ Notes
  • Engineering Objectives - This spreadsheet gives a brief overview of which tasks can be used to support which objectives from the diploma programme of study.
  • Engineering Tasks contains the task sheet for each of the twenty tasks (suitable for projection onto an IWB or for distributing as worksheets, plus photocopy masters for each task.
  • Working Out gives the numerical answers for 13 of the tasks.
