Secondary Magazine Issue 83

Welcome to Issue 83 of the Secondary Magazine.
It’s the summer term – the sun is out and you may just have that breathing space that a Year 11 class provides on the timetable once the examinations are over. We hope there are some items in this edition to interest you as you pause to catch your breath.

Contents

From the editor
Do you read mathematics education research? The new NCETM microsite Accessing Research may whet your appetite and provide a stimulus for professional development activity.

It's in the News! A curious case
This resource uses the news story of a criminal caught hiding in a suitcase in the luggage compartment of a coach, as the context for an investigation into volume, asking students to design a case that a man could fit into, but is not too large to appear suspicious!

The Interview - Marie Joubert
Continuing the theme of research, our interview in this edition is with Dr Marie Joubert who is a researcher in mathematics education at the University of Bristol.

A resource for the classroom...
The task Missing Multipliers from NRICH provides an opportunity for pupils to think, reason and justify in their mathematics lesson. Would this make your lesson ‘outstanding’?

5 things to do
Some professional development opportunities and an invitation to share your favourite number.

Tales from the classroom
Which is better: 25% off or 25% extra free, or are they the same thing? What would your pupils say? Read what happened in one mathematics classroom when pupils started to answer this question.
