Many teachers in primary and secondary schools and colleges are discovering that using ICT and digital technology within a mathematics lesson can enhance both teaching and learning.
Perhaps you are a team leader in a secondary or college mathematics department or a mathematics subject leader in a primary or special school or just an enthusiast who is planning a CPD session with colleagues. The guidance materials below will, we hope, give you some ideas of what you can incorporate into such a session. It will also help those who just want to explore the “ICT and Digital Technology used in mathematics teaching” microsite.
Working with one or more colleagues from your department, choose two of the examples from the Lesson Reports or the Case Studies and then discuss these questions:
- How did the teacher use the digital technology in his/her lesson?
- Did using the digital technology enhance the lesson?
- Could the teacher have taught the lesson effectively without using digital technology?
- Could you use this in one of your lessons?
Plan a lesson using this digital technology (or something else from the list of useful online resources).
One of you could teach the lesson and then report back to the others.
- How did it feel to teach a lesson which had been planned by a group?
- What happened during the lesson?
- What was the learners’ experience? Was it improved by your use of digital technology?
- How would you change or improve the lesson next time?
Why not share what happened and your personal reflections about the questions above, by posting in the ICT in mathematics online community. You could post your comments in the Forum and your lesson plan in the Documents section.

For the things you have tried out for yourself in your own classroom to become useful pieces of professional learning, there is a need to capture them, reflect upon them and remark on them. The NCETM Personal Learning Space (PLS) allows you to do this.
- Use My Learning Journal to collect your thoughts and reflections as well as to log actions; documents can be attached to your entries. You could do this now by visiting your own PLS.
- Use My Favourites and Notes to take note of and organise interesting things you have found (like this page) and want to return to easily in future.
- Use the Sharing and Contacts facility to share elements of your PLS with colleagues, selecting them from your own list of contacts
- Use the “Request a reminder” function
