Welcome to Issue 96 of the Secondary Magazine (incorporating FE)

96 is the seventh number that looks the same when written upside down: can you work out the others?

This issue contains items which range from the trivial, through the interesting to some fundamental questions for us as teachers of mathematics; we hope there will be something to interest and engage you.


From the editor - writing on the table
Do you try to stop pupils writing on the table or is this part of your pedagogic repertoire? Why could this tiny change make such a big difference in the classroom?
A resource for the classroom - working with quadratic equations
Being able to work with algebraic expressions is an important skill underpinning much of the secondary mathematics curriculum; considering how pupils acquire and develop that skill is an appropriate activity for teachers. How do you teach pupils to factorise a quadratic? And when the co-efficient of the x2 term is >1, what then? 
Focus on...assessment
This issue contains the eighth in a series of Focus on... articles looking at an aspect of pedagogy in mathematics. Assessment is fundamental to teaching: both formative on-going assessment and summative assessment have a role to play. Just been looking for 'Dance Squared' and 'Notes on a Triangle' (the two short films by Rene Jodoin and the National Film Board of Canada as mentioned above) and find they are both on You Tube (of course?!) ...

... but now also find they were both mentioned in Secondary Magazine issue 59 ... guess I let that one slip past as well!

Perhaps as an NCETM Co-ordinator, I shouldn't admit that I don't always get around to reading these magazines. But it's true. So I am especially delighted that I found a moment to look at this one.

The table writing article made me stop and think about pedagogy, and the quadratics factorisation made me do some mathematics.

And I just loved the Animated Factorisation Diagrams!!! Reminded me of those wonderful old films 'Dance Squared' and 'Notes on a Triangle'. OK so there's no music with this animation, but it was a whole new way of 'seeing' factors, primes etc for me.

Why not set it on fast forward, sit back and enjoy?! Don't know whether or when it stops, but it doesn't take long to get to 1000 and I suspect it's just getting started ... definitely scope for awe and wonder ;-)
