The NCETM Professional Development Lead Support Programme (FE)
The FE sector needs to expand its capacity to teach maths, particularly up to GCSE maths. This flows from the requirement that all post-16 students who have not yet achieved the benchmark Grade C should continue with the subject.
This has created a demand for more teachers across the sector capable of teaching GCSE maths. In order to support this need there are a number of new initiatives occurring. The programme of professional development (the NCETM FE GCSE Mathematics Enhancement Programme (MEP) has been very successful in upskilling over 2000 staff already working in the sector, chiefly those already involved in numeracy or functional skills teaching, and those teaching subjects with mathematical content, for example, economics or engineering.
The NCETM has developed the materials to support this programme and is continuing to develop further programmes to support all teachers of mathematics up to GCSE as part of the ETF Maths Pipeline Programme. The NCETM has already trained 104 experienced practitioners (PD Leads) to lead these programmes in face-to-face sessions with groups of teachers and lecturers around the country. The PD Leads are equipped to deliver professional development in the post-16 sector to teachers/trainers teaching Level 2 Mathematics (resit GCSE/functional skills) or who are teaching in a vocational context. This programme is called the NCETM Professional Development Lead Support Programme (FE).
Applications to take part in this programme were welcome from anyone already involved in providing mathematics CPD in the FE and skills sector and especially those with experience of training provider, vocational settings and the secure estate, in particular the programme was targeted at:
- staff and other colleagues from training providers, work based, vocational settings and the secure estate charged with organising and running mathematics PD opportunities;
- others working within the FE and skills sector area, charged with organising and delivering mathematics PD opportunities;
- independent mathematics consultants and organisations offering mathematics PD; and
- colleagues from HE institutions offering PD for the FE and Skills sector.
No further cohorts are currently planned.
