This paper reports research into strategies used by Year 5 and 6 children when solving a variety of written division problems.

This paper is part of a Nuffield Foundation-funded project aimed at developing primary children’s understanding of mathematics using visual representations. This paper reports the use of a test of multiplication based on the range of contexts and representations associated with multiplication.
