This research outlines the strategies used by Year 5 and 6 children to solve division calculations. They found that children with a more flexible approach are often more successful than those with only one or two strategies.

This research highlights the problems students may have if solving multiplication and division calculations using informal methods alone. In the study these methods dominated in Year 6 and there was evidence of a lack of conceptual understanding of multiplication and division
