  • To support teachers to experience deep learning of mathematics at level 2
  • To consider changes in requirements occurring in GCSE mathematics.

When: Colleges or training providers interested in hosting one of these workshops are asked to email the NCETM, and we will contact you to discuss details.

Post Mathematics Enhancement Programme (MEP)

The workshops, commissioned and funded by The Education and Training Foundation, began in February 2015 and last until July 2015.

All workshops are free to attend, but numbers are limited: more information can be found below. All workshops run from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. The workshops are listed below by region - for example, SE is South East, YH is Yorkshire and the Humber, LON is London etc.

Target audience:
To attend these days, participants must have completed all six days of the Maths Enhancement Programme.

When: Colleges or training providers interested in hosting one of these workshops are asked to email the NCETM, and we will contact you to discuss details.

Mathematical focus of each day:

All days will include problem solving and embedding / contextualisation of the topics.

The topics covered in these day will be different from those in the Taking GCSE Deeper workshops. As in the Maths Enhancement Programme, some of the topics will be from the Higher level specification.

There will also be an opportunity to network with other MEP ‘graduates’ and to exchange ideas and share resources.

Professional Development Lead Support Programme

We are therefore looking to recruit an additional team of PD Leads and to equip them to deliver professional development in the post-16 sector to teachers/trainers teaching Level 2 Mathematics (resit GCSE/functional skills) or who are teaching in a vocational context. To achieve this, we are using our existing model, and customising it to fit the wider FE context. This programme is called The NCETM Professional Development Lead Support Programme (FE).

Specifically, The NCETM welcomes applications to take part in this programme from anyone already involved in providing mathematics CPD in the FE and skills sector and especially those with experience of training provider, vocational settings and the secure estate, in particular:

  • staff and other colleagues from Training providers, work based, vocational settings and the secure estate charged with organising and running mathematics PD opportunities;
  • others working within the FE and skills sector area, charged with organising and delivering mathematics PD opportunities.
  • independent mathematics consultants and organisations offering mathematics PD; and
  • colleagues from HE institutions offering PD for the FE and Skills sector.

GCSE Pipeline Webinars

You may be interested in the following webinars which took place to support the delivery of the ETF GCSE Pipeline Programme.

Each Pipeline webinar consisted of a presentation followed by a question and answer session, and lasted around 45 minutes.

  Webinar title Date Time
1 Schemes of work Tuesday 30th June 4pm
2 Achievements and attitudes in GCSE Mathematics resit GCSE classes Friday 3rd July 3pm
3 Getting students from a D to a C Tuesday 7th July 3pm
4 Revision techniques Tuesday 7th July 4pm
5 Formative and summative assessment Thursday 9th July 4pm

1. Writing a scheme of work for GCSE resit students

GCSE maths resit students have experienced repeated failure and arrive with many negative attitudes towards maths and their own ability to succeed. The success of a GCSE resit class depends on a good scheme of work. Students respond well to classes which are engaging, challenging and fun but which also explicitly prepare them for the exam. This webinar will describe the key features and structure of a SoW based on this approach and identify some good sources for course materials.

A recording of the Scheme of Work webinar can be found here (password: GCSEpipeline) and the Powerpoint slides from the webinar are available to download.

2. Achievements and attitudes in GCSE Mathematics GCSE classes

This webinar will focus on this current Manchester Metropolitan University project which is evaluating how interventions based on 'Realistic Mathematics Education' (RME) can affect GCSE resit students' attitudes, exam success, and longer term understanding.  The team are developing and trialling interventions in various post-16 settings, including a class taught by a non-specialist teacher.  (http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/achievement-and-attitudes-gcse-mathematics-resit-classes).

A recording of the Achievements and attitudes in GCSE Mathematics classes webinar can be found here (password: GCSEpipeline) and the Powerpoint slides from the webinar are available to download.

3. Moving from a grade D to a C in GCSE Maths resits

This webinar will highlight a range of strategies and approaches proven to raise achievement in this challenging arena. It will focus upon the key issues and offer some solutions to help raise achievement by considering best practice. https://makingthegraded2c.wordpress.com/resource-guide/

A recording of the Moving from a grade D to a C in GCSE Maths resits webinar can be found here (password: GCSEpipeline) and the Powerpoint slides from the webinar are available to download. The ACER resource guide is referred to in Making the Grade: GCSE D to C can accessed here.

4. GCSE Maths Revision

This webinar will focus upon the why, what, when, where and how of revision. Students do not automatically know the best strategies to revise so this session focuses upon a range of ideas and highlights some great resources to help the revision focus

A recording of the GCSE Maths Revision webinar can be found here (password: GCSEpipeline) and the Powerpoint slides from the webinar are available to download.

5. Using classroom assessments to improve teaching and learning in Maths lessons.

If you are curious about formative assessment and/or how to implement it in your maths lessons, this webinar will provide ideas to get you started. The webinar will:

  • Look at the difference between summative and formative assessment.
  • Reflect on the reasons for assessment.
  • Reflect on the benefits of using formative assessment.
  • Find out practical ideas and inspiration for embedding formative assessment in maths teaching and learning.

A recording of the Classroom Assessments webinar can be found here (password: GCSEpipeline) and the Powerpoint slides from the webinar are available to download.

Can you tell us the general area of your establishment? eg London, NE, NW or Midlands... and it very much depends on numbers, but you can attend as an individual practitioner if a course is being offered in another venue in your region .

Hi,

Having completed the MEP course last year (including the days on Algebra and Stats), please can you tell me if there is any cross-over between that and the 'Taking GCSE Maths Deeper' Algebra and Stats day? I would really like to attend the Algebra and Stats day in London on 5th May but it appears to be fully booked. Could you tell me if there is any possibility of getting on to that one?

Thanks,

There are currently no plans to make the resources and powerpoints available on the NCETM website to anyone who has not attended a workshop. The resources may be made available on the ETF Exhibition / NCETM web site after the end of all the workshops (Aug 2015) but this is not guaranteed. However there will be 5 webinars associated with the topics on the 'Taking GCSE Deeper' materials in May / June / July which may be of interest to you. The dates will be announced once the webinars are fully planned.

Retail no, but we note your interest and if the workshops are successful we hope to run courses for other vocational sectors. General Customer Service possibly yes but entirely at your own risk.

As for CACHE: A reminder that these courses are only up to Level 2 maths. CACHE goes up to Level 5 where there is a fairly high level business Maths requirement, so only where level 2 is appropriate.

There will only be 9 'Deepening your understanding of number' events - 1 per region. Likewise there will only be 1 secure estate and 1 of each of the other vocational sector Vitalisers in each region. Selecting a different region is the only current alternative as no further events are being planned for any of these programmes.
