# Shapes and measures

A selection of resources.

Click on the title of the resource to expand the section for a description. Clicking on the green button within the description will take you to the resource. A summary of the topics covered is included in the blue box within the description.

## Resources and CPD for those working with students resitting GCSE Mathematics - Geometry (NCETM)

This is a link to NCETM Resources and CPD for those working with students resitting GCSE Mathematics is a NCETM Essentials package which has a wealth of resources for teachers working with Level 2 students on many aspects of geometry.

Topics: 2D construction with loci, developing vocabulary, naming and classification, 3D modelling, Angles, Area and perimeter, connecting perpendicular lines, Constructions, transformations, Enlargement, Evaluating statements about length and area, Loci, Shape and space formulae, Trigonometry

## Departmental Workshops - Shape and Space (NCETM)

This is a link to a set of departmental workshops from NCETM on shape and space (geometry). The full range of workshops can be viewed by clicking on departmental workshops in the list on the right of the screen.

Topics: 2D shapes, angle properties, circle theorems, congruence and similiarity, constructions, dimensions, enlargement, loci, trigonometry

## Solid Geometry (Math is Fun)

This webpage gives an overview of solid shapes, it covers the names and terms such as faces, edges and vertices. There are links which allow you to explore some of the items in further detail and questions at the bottom of the page.

Topics: 3d shapes , solid names, faces, edges & vertices

## Constructions (Math is Fun)

This webpage provides animations for a number of constructions including those on the GCSE and others. Thinking about how/why the constructions work would make an interesting follow up task.

Topics: Constructions

## Resources and CPD for those working with students resitting GCSE Mathematics - Measure (NCETM)

This is a link to NCETM Resources and CPD for those working with students resitting GCSE Mathematics is a NCETM Essentials package which has a wealth of resources for teachers working with Level 2 students on many aspects of measures.

Topics: Length and area, calories, money, temperature, volume, weight

## Describing Quadrilaterals (Mathematics Assessment Resource Service)

This is a really interesting resource from the MAPS collection which examines what information is required to define a quadrilateral. This links to a previous resource on triangles. The teachers’ notes are particularly useful to anyone wishing to get to grips with the big idea(s) behind the topic.

Topics: Mathematical language and constructions

## Possible Triangle Constructions (Mathematics Assessment Resource Service)

This is a really interesting resource from the MAPS collection which examines what information is required to define a triangle. This links to a follow up resource on quadrilaterals. The teachers’ notes are particularly useful to anyone wishing to get to grips with the big idea(s) behind the topic.

Topics: Mathematical language and constructions

## Measuring (BBC Skillswise)

This site offers a range of resources from E1 to L2. The resources are grouped into six headings: Calculations, Measuring, Number, Shapes, Graphs, Percentages and Fractions. Each topic has a short video showing how the subject occurs in the work environment. A selection of fact sheets and activities can be accessed by clicking on the appropriate level in the box on the right of the screen entitled “start learning”. Games and quizzes can be accessed in the scroll bar at the bottom portion of the screen. Measuring offers resources on; length and distance, capacity, weight, time and date, money, temperature, calories, imperial and metric.

Topics: Measuring

## Shapes (BBC Skillswise)

This site offers a range of resources from E1 to L2. The resources are grouped into six headings: Calculations, Measuring, Number, Shapes, Graphs, Percentages and Fractions. Each topic has a short video showing how the subject occurs in the work environment. A selection of fact sheets and activities can be accessed by clicking on the appropriate level in the box on the right of the screen entitled “start learning”. Games and quizzes can be accessed in the scroll bar at the bottom portion of the screen. Shapes, offers work on; angles, 2d & 3d shapes, area, perimeter and maps and plans.

Topics: Shapes

## Evaluating Statements About Enlargements (2D and 3D) (Mathematics Assessment Resource Service)

This is one of many resources produced by the Shell Centre at the University of Nottingham for the MARS project in the USA. There are comprehensive teacher notes and excellent student resources. This resource covers how scale factors effect length, area and volume. Some of the concepts are challenging and it does contain generalisation.

Topics: Similar shapes

## Similar (Math is Fun)

This webpage provides a quick summary of similar and congruent shapes. There are links to explore points further and sample questions.
